Trees for Tigray
Objectives:
- Reforestation of eroded hills and barren areas to fight erosion and reclamation of cultivated farmland. additional benefits are development of biodiversity and positive impact on climate. These activities provide long term benefit.
- Support for farmers that participate in reforestation activities with water harvesting for vegetable and fruit tree plantation. This increases the nutrition situation of participants as short term benefit.
- Training of farmers in vegetable cultivation and fruit tree fosterage.
Actions:
The foundation works in close collaboration with the agricultural authority in Adwa and local peasant associations. Activities include:
- Donation of water pumps and hoses, vegetable seeds and fruit tree seedlings.
- Construction of small damns, water reservoirs and ponds for water conservation.
- Construction of river diversions and canals for gravity irrigation of agricultural land.
- Reforestation of at least 100 hectare forest areas annually.
- Purchase of tools and equipment for training centers.
- Donation of honey extractors to increase honey harvest and quality.
Since 2006 we finance a fruit tree nursery to produce fruit tree seedlings for all 17 peasant associations in the Adwa area. By 2007 we have supported 10 out of the 17 peasant associations, such as:
- Construction of dam and river diversion for Bete Yohannes
- Construction of dam and river diversion for Debre Genet
- Construction of dam and river diversion for Wedi Keshi
- Construction of dam and river diversion for Salam
- supply of 20 water pumps in total and material for honey production
- so far reforestation of a total of 450 hectares
